Continuing education terms and definitions.

(Glossary of terms related to continuing education as defined by
the Continuing and Professional Studies Office at Texas A&M University.)
A
ACCREDITATION. To identify (an educational institution) as maintaining standards to ensure their certification practices are acceptable and qualify the graduates for admission to higher or more specialized institutional or for professional practice
APPROVED PROGRAM. A program approved by select professional organizations or associations as recognized continuing education for licensures renewal as specified by a set of occupation rules.
APPROVED PROVIDER. An Approved Provider is regarded by select professional organizations or associations to have a combination of services and content standards that meets or exceeds expectations for approval by regulating agencies. i.e. Texas A&M University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Bb VISTA (Blackboard Vista). A computer-based learning platform.
BLENDED. A combination of delivery methods (i.e. face-to-face, technology-mediated, DVDs, videos, CDs, podcasts, webinars, etc.)
C
CERTIFICATE. An official document that certifies an individual has completed a continuing education program of learning with or without CEUs.
CEU - CONTINUING EDUCATION UNIT. Nationally recognized units earned for participation in qualifying continuing education programs and may be used for professional advancement or as evidence of increased abilities, not for college credit.
COHORT. A group of individuals who move through a continuing education program together.
CONTINUING EDUCATION. Courses, programs, or organized learning experiences that bring participants up-to-date in a particular area of knowledge or skills and enhance personal or professional goals.
CPE. Continuing Professional Education (contact hours)
CREDENTIAL. A degree, certificate or award which recognizes a course of study taken in a certain area, and acknowledges the skills, knowledge and competencies acquired. An example is a teaching credential.
D
DISTANCE EDUCATION. Education that takes place when the instructor and participant are separated by space and/or time. The gap between the two can be bridged through the use of technology - such as audio tapes, videoconferencing, satellite broadcasts and online technology - and/or more traditional delivery methods, such as the postal service.
DISTANCE LEARNING. The process by which technology is used for continuing education in ways where the participant does not have to physically be in the place where the teaching is taking place. Access to the instructor is gained through technology such as the Internet, interactive videoconferencing and satellite. Distance learning allows individuals to participate in continuing education activities at times convenient to their job and family obligations from any location with high-bandwidth Internet access.
E
EDUCATIONAL PROVIDER. A college, university, high school, non-profit agency, corporation or other entity which originates a course or program of study.
EFAT. Equine Facilitated Activities and Therapy
EFT. Equine Facilitated Therapy
ePAY. A secure, fraud resistant electronic transfer of an authorized payment from a company/consumer’s checking or savings account into the account of Texas A&M University.
F
F2F. Face-to-face. Describes a personal interaction in real life as opposed to via digital or electronic communications medium. In a classroom setting.

I
INSTRUCTOR. Anyone teaching an approved course of instruction or lecturing at an approved seminar. May be a licensee.
INTERNSHIP. A short-term opportunity where a person gains supervised practical experience in a particular area of interest or occupation.

L
LICENSE. A credential granted by a licensing board in accordance with state law. Many professions require a license to practice (e.g., architects, counselors, dentists, dieticians, engineers, geologists, lawyers, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, teachers, veterinarians). Most licenses require successful completion of a degree from an accredited college or university, and in many cases, passing a required examination and/or successfully completing a required, supervised clinical/practicum of a specified number of hours.

NONCREDIT COURSE. A course or activity carrying no academic credit applicable toward a degree, diploma, certificate, or other formal award. Corporations or nonprofit organizations may offer noncredit courses.

ONLINE. Information available while connected to the internet. (Usually requiring little to no face-to-face interaction.)
P
PDH. Professional Development Hour.
PERSONALIZED STUDY or INDEPENDENT STUDY. A course of study with a specific set of identified goals and objectives undertaken by an individual under the supervision of one or more faculty members outside the classroom.
PROGRAM. One course or a combination of courses and related activities organized for the attainment of broad educational objectives described by the institution.

R
RACE. Registry of Approved Continuing Education.
RESEARCH. Careful or diligent search; the collecting of information about a particular subject.
S
SELF-PACED. A type of learning in which an individual who desires a flexible schedule completes course work as he/she has time available. The participant is not expected to proceed in a cohort or group. There often is a maximum time limit that the participant may take to complete the class, but this time limit is usually far longer than it takes to complete the material. An example is a correspondence class.
T
TDLR. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
TERM-BASED. Continuing education with a defined start and end date. The individual participates with a cohort or group. Usually, classes are completed in more than one week's time and traditionally are quarter, semester, and trimester classes.
TECHNOLOGY-MEDIATED. Serviced provided via a technology interface between provider and student, that allows immediate exchange of information between provider and student over long distances.
TEXAS ONLINE. Many useful government services can be found on this one website. The Continuing and Professional Studies Office manages the use of this site for online registration and payment for Texas A&M University departments and units.
