FAQs
When should I take the GRE?
The first step is to check with the grad school for which you will be applying. Find out exactly when they need your scores. In general you should take your GRE at least one month before they need the scores.
Your quantitative and verbal scores are sent to the grad school(s) of your choice as soon as you complete the test. However, the written analytical test takes another two weeks to score...at least that's what ETS (the company that makes the GRE) says. Give yourself a month, just in case. It will also give you a chance to retake the GRE if you completely bomb.
The TAMU Measurement and Testing Services say you should sign up to take the GRE anywhere from two weeks to two months ahead of time, depending on how full their schedule is. Give them a call today and get signed up. They can be reached at 979-862-7992.
When should I start prepping for the GRE?
The quantitative section of the GRE is mostly review. The majority of the material was covered by the time you were a sophomore in high school. You can easily get prepped for the math studying an hour or so each day for a month.
The verbal section, however, is one big, long vocabulary test. It's very difficult to improve your vocabulary enough in one month to make a dent on the GRE. It can be done however. I'll give you the vocabulary you're most likely to see on the GRE and show you how to learn 300 or more new words each month...and be able to actually remember them by GRE time.
Finally, the written analytical section needs as much prep time as you can give it. Your writing skills are usually improved over years...not months. I can help with this as well. In our class I'll show you a few dirty little tricks that will help you do much better on the written analytical essays even if you only have a few days of prep.
Bottom line...a year of prep is ideal, but even a month can give you a significant increase in your score.
