Online Course Description

Introduction to Therapeutic Riding provides material regarding the Therapeutic Riding Industry and the variety of service areas in the Industry. It includes the history of the therapeutic riding, hippotherapy, therapeutic riding, equine facilitated psychotherapy, therapeutic vaulting, therapeutic carriage driving, and competition opportunities for people with disabilities. The course addresses the personnel, horses, equipment and clients that are suitable for the different specialty areas.
The material presented in the course is introductory in nature. Experience at a therapeutic riding center will be helpful. Students desiring more in-depth information on many of the topics can study the supplementary material given in the references, or enroll in additional course modules.

Instructor Bio
Elizabeth “Lili” Kellogg, director, ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship, McKinney Texas, has been involved in the therapeutic riding industry for since 1987. She served as the Program Director at Equest Therapeutic Horsemanship, Dallas Texas from 1987 - 2007. Prior to moving to Texas, she served as an instructor in the Horse Management Department at the University of Minnesota Technical College, Waseca.
Lili graduated from Southern Virginia Junior College with an AAS in Equestrian studies and received her BS degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University. In 1985, she received her Therapeutic Riding Instructor certification from the Cheff Center, became a certified Special Olympic Coach in 1990, a NARHA Advanced Instructor in 1993, and received her NARHA Master certification in 1997.
Lili has coached equestrian teams at local, state, and national and international disabled sports competitions, including the 1990 World Disabled Sports Championships in Assen, Holland, the International Special Olympics in Minneapolis in 1991, the 1994 World Championships for Disabled Riders in England and was a coach for Team USA at the 1996 Paralympics. As an involved member of NARHA, Lili is a faculty member for Instructor Workshops and Evaluator Training, is a Lead visitor for NARHA’S accreditation program and currently serves on the NARHA Higher Education Committee and the NARHA competition task force. Lili is the former chairman of a NARHA/AQHA task force that is working on increasing the popularity of the AQHA classes for riders with disabilities. Lili has served on the Board of LSTEN (Lone Star Therapeutic Equestrian Network), CAN (Competition Association of NARHA) and the North Texas Hunter Jumper Club. She is a former District Commissioner for the Dallas Pony Club and past chairperson for the NARHA Instructor Certification Committee. Additionally, Lili has served on various NARHA task forces to develop new programs. Lili is the 2002 Recipient of the James Brady professional Achievement Award, the highest honor in the Therapeutic Riding industry.
Under Lili’s tutelage, Equest’s involvement in higher education has developed into offering this NARHA approved instructor training track that offers 16 CEU from Texas A&M University.
