Continuing Education Tracks

 

Equine Facilitated Therapy (EFT), a type of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT), is a rapidly growing field of practice offering therapists a unique and effective approach with their clients.

A variety of skill sets are required in today’s equine facilitated therapy/horse management operations. This program is flexible for a wide spectrum of professional career paths, from individuals with a genuine desire to know more about this emerging field to individuals needing practitioner-based skills or advanced research to improve his/her knowledge. As the various tracks are completed, participants build professional development while earning continuing education in an area of expertise.

Benefits

  • Develop concepts and practitioner strategies for therapeutic outreach services and horse management operations.
  • Greater understanding of equine care techniques that emphasize nutrition, disease, exercise physiology and soundness of horses. 
  • Practitioner-based lessons that can be completed in approximately 12-15 months per track, many of which are online with field clinical opportunities for specific audiences.

Prerequisite Requirements

Recommendation: Basic education required for each track to include high school or equivalency, 2-year and/or 4-year degree.

Physical Therapists (PTs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are encouraged to take the hippotherapy track if interested in integrating hippotherapy into treatment.

Prior participation in professional training in horse management operations and/or therapeutic outreach services or one of the following will be a plus:

 North American Riding for the Handicapped Association 

 American Hippotherapy Association 

 Certified Horsemanship Association 

 Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association 

 Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association
